The Smarden Place Flats 1918

The Smarden Place Flats

Smarden Place was built in 1918 in the same year as the end of the war to end all wars! The imposing building is probably one of the first examples of Edwardian flats or apartment buildings.

At the time, it is said, some local residents thought it was an outrageous idea. The architect of the new St Andrew’s Church apparently lived there.

This lovely old building is notable for its staircase and black and red tiled floors so typical of the time. The area was known as Pearsons Corner because of the well known Pearsons shop that was situated nearby on the site of Baxalls (2022).
